1. Pixel Tombstones
Physical spaces die without funerals. Even when a building is demolished, no obituary is published; when an alleyway vanishes, no memorial service is held. Silent deaths and unrecorded disappearances repeat as part of our daily routine.
However, the digital world is different. Past images captured in satellite-based map services, old photos on personal blogs, and location tags on social media have become virtual cemeteries for spaces that have physically ceased to exist. Tombstones made of pixels and altars linked by URLs bear witness to these lost places.
Within these hardened digital strata, we discover moments preserved like taxidermy. As time fixed in data is permanently stored on servers, the past has become an object of excavation. Each click on a satellite history unearths a grave of time, revealing layers distinct from the present. In these digital maps, we reunite with vanished spaces, where satellite imagery and street views serve as funeral portraits for deceased locations.
Though a single click allows us to travel back in time and revisit lost childhood memories, those places now exist only as ghostly spaces of pixels. The GPS coordinates of a newly built apartment complex remain the same, but the stories remembered by that land have fundamentally shifted. Entirely different traces of life overlap on the same numeric coordinates. This new form of mourning—replacing physical extinction with digital preservation—is becoming our everyday reality.
1. 픽셀로 된 비석들
물리적 공간은 장례식 없이 죽는다. 건물이 철거되어도 부고가 나지 않고, 골목이 사라져도 추도식이 열리지 않는다. 조용한 죽음과 기록되지 않는 소멸이 일상적으로 반복된다.
하지만 디지털 세계는 다르다. 위성사진 기반 디지털 지도 서비스에 기록된 과거 이미지들, 개인 블로그에 올려진 옛 사진들, SNS에 태그된 위치 정보들이 실제로는 사라진 공간들의 가상 묘지가 되었다. 픽셀로 된 비석들과 링크로 연결된 제단들이 잃어버린 공간들을 증언한다.
이렇게 굳어진 디지털 지층 속에서 우리는 박제된 순간들을 발견한다. 데이터로 고정된 시간들이 서버에 영구 보존되면서 과거는 발굴의 대상이 되었다. 위성사진의 촬영 기록들을 클릭할 때마다 시간의 무덤을 파헤치며, 현재와는 다른 여러 지층을 목격하게 된다. 이렇듯 디지털 지도 속에서 우리는 사라진 공간들을 재회하고, 위성사진과 스트리트뷰는 죽은 공간들의 영정사진이 되었다.
클릭 한 번으로 시간을 거슬러 올라가 잃어버린 어린 시절 기억과 만날 수 있지만, 그곳은 이제 픽셀로만 존재하는 유령의 공간이다. 새로 들어선 아파트 단지의 GPS 좌표는 같지만, 그 땅이 기억하는 이야기는 완전히 달라졌다. 같은 숫자로 표기되는 위치에 전혀 다른 삶의 흔적들이 겹쳐져 있다. 물리적 소멸을 디지털 보존으로 대체하는 이 새로운 애도의 방식이 일상이 되어가고 있다.
2. Fluid Boundaries
As fixed boundaries crumble and transition into a fluid state, the very concept of demarcation is redefined. This redefinition of de-bordering does not mean the elimination of boundaries, but rather a shift in the method of drawing them. It is a transition from permanent line-drawing to temporary marking, from fixed territories to variable domains. In this process, a boundary no longer serves to divide locations but to distinguish perspectives.
As temporal partitioning becomes more significant than spatial division, boundaries become conditional, valid only for a specific duration. Construction flags directly manifest this transition—flags fluttering in the wind, safety tapes, and fences that move adaptively. These are not eternal lines of demarcation, but transient markers. They will vanish once construction ends and will be relocated as necessity dictates.
Such temporary boundaries can be found throughout the city: fences at redevelopment sites, street banners, and “no parking” signs. In the ceaseless cycle where fluid boundaries become fixed and fixed boundaries return to a state of flux, the entire city begins to resemble a colossal, provisional space.
2. 가변적 경계
고정되었던 경계가 허물어지고 유동적 상태로 전환되면서, 구획이라는 개념 자체가 재정의된다. 탈구획의 재정의란 경계를 없애는 것이 아니라, 경계를 다시 그리는 방식을 바꾸는 것이다. 영구적 선긋기에서 임시적 선긋기로, 고정적 영역에서 가변적 영역으로의 전환이다. 이 과정에서 경계는 위치를 나누는 것이 아니라 시점을 구분하는 역할을 한다.
공간적 구획보다 시간적 구획이 더 중요해지면서, 경계는 일정 기간 동안만 유효한 조건이 된다. 공사장의 깃발들이 이러한 전환을 가장 직접적으로 보여준다. 바람에 흔들리는 깃발, 안전 테이프, 가변적으로 이동하는 울타리들. 이들은 영구적인 경계선이 아니라 임시적인 표식들이다. 공사가 끝나면 사라질 것이고, 필요에 따라 다른 곳으로 옮겨질 것이다.
도시 곳곳에서 이런 임시적 경계들을 발견할 수 있다. 재개발 현장의 펜스, 거리의 현수막, 주차 금지 표식 등. 가변적 경계가 고정되고 고정된 경계가 다시 유동화되는 끊임없는 순환 속에서, 도시 전체가 거대한 임시 공간으로 보인다.
