Looking Through (hindurchsehen)
A telescope is an instrument that makes the distant seem near. What exists but remains unreachable becomes recognized only through the act of looking. The crown of the head is no different. It clearly exists, yet can never be seen by oneself — only through an instrument can it be faced.
In this work, the telescope’s gaze turns from the distant universe toward the body. The moment one looks through the telescope fixed toward the ceiling, a camera mounted on top captures the image in real time and displays it on a screen. There lies the crown of the head. The one who was looking becomes, before one knows it, the one who is seen.
들여다보다 (hindurchsehen)
망원경은 멀리 있는 것을 가까이 있는 것처럼 보이게 해주는 도구다. 존재하지만 닿을 수 없던 대상은, 바라봄을 통해 비로소 인식된다. 신체의 정수리 역시 이와 다르지 않다. 분명 존재하지만 스스로는 결코 볼 수 없으며, 오직 도구를 빌려야만 비로소 마주할 수 있는 자리이기 때문이다.
이 작업에서 망원경은 먼 우주 대신, 몸 쪽으로 시선을 돌려 사용된다. 천장을 향해 고정된 망원경을 들여다보는 순간, 상단에 장착된 카메라가 그 모습을 실시간으로 포착해 화면에 띄운다. 화면 속에 정수리가 있다. 바라보던 사람은 어느새 바라보이는 사람이 된다.
